Hey Reader, let me tell you about Brooke.
Nonprofit executive director. Small team. Big mission. And she needed funding for a new program. Goal: $5,000
We sent 2 emails on Giving Tuesday. She raised $7,000 – fully covering the cost of the program with some left over. Huge WIN!
I don’t want you to see this and get comparison-itis, Reader. Because we didn’t just send those 2 emails.
Brooke was one of my retainer clients for a few years until they hired in-house. We’d spent that entire first year together – from January to late October – cleaning up their email list, establishing a welcome sequence, nurturing their audience segments (donors, program participants, volunteers, etc), and sending consistent newsletters.
So when the time came for an ask? Their email list was filled with people who actively support them.
Their audience was used to getting 2-4 emails from them per month, and the build-up to Giving Tuesday didn’t feel out of place.
Most importantly, their emails didn’t feel frantic. Their audience felt informed, respected, and thanked. They knew what the organization was doing up to that point, and we were transparent about where their donation would go.
Then we thanked them.
The key to that $7K was cleaning up their email list and sending emails consistently BEFORE asking them for money.
This is one of the main reasons I think summer is the prime time to prune your list and send your newsletter consistently, if you aren’t already. That way, when your next fundraiser or Giving Tuesday rolls around, your ask feels like a more natural “yes” for your supporters.
Let’s roll into Quarter 3 of this year with a plan and be prepared for year-end!
Need a little guidance to get started? I have a few spots left for the Individual Giving Igniter – my consultant-style service that provides you with the email strategy and resources to put your email list to work. Reply to this email with the word “guide” and I’ll send you more details. 🫶
I won't tell you what to think, but I WILL tell you that facts are so important in this weird age of generative AI, "fake" news, and a tense global political climate. That's my friends at The Flyover are committed to sending you the facts instead of trying to get a reaction that fits their agenda. Yay for objectivity! Check them out below.
